Common Usages
Abacavir is an antiviral medication used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs [abacavir and lamivudine (Epzicom); abacavir, lamivudine, and zidovudine (Trizivir)] for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Adverse Drug Reactions
Hypersensitivity (also called hypersensitivity reaction) refers to undesirable reactions produced by the normal immune system. These reactions may be damaging, uncomfortable, or occasionally fatal.

2008/07/24- Serious and sometimes fatal hypersensitivity reactions (HSR)
"...caused by abacavir therapy are significantly more common in patients with a particular human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele, HLA-B*5701. Abacavir HSR is a multi-organ syndrome characterized by 2 or more clinical signs or symptoms that can include fever, rash, gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory symptoms and constitutional symptoms."
